Whole lemon cake

Looking for a lemon cake that is out of the ordinary? Or even out of this world? Then this whole lemon cake is just what you’re looking for! As the title suggests, the recipe uses whole lemons to give the cake its flavour and, surprising as this may sound, the result is actually far more subtle than, say, a lemon drizzle cake. Not only that, the whole lemons lend the cake an incredibly soft texture and a moistness that is hard to beat. Roast beetroot soup

Although the heart on the beetroot soup might suggest this was meant to be a Valentine’s Day post, it wasn’t at all! It’s pure coincidence. I actually shot this a few weeks ago, but just hadn’t gotten round to preparing the post. In an attempt to undo some of the damage done over the festive season, I went on a bit of a soup binge in January. Homemade soups are delicious, healthy and, if you lay off the cream, fairly low in fat. This roast beetroot soup is one such soup. Anything with beetroot in it can only be good. While I don’t generally go in for the whole ‘super food’ thing, I have to admit, beets do score top marks for nutritional value. And they’re versatile too. They really are pretty super! Mulled wine

Happy New Year! I hope 2017 got off to a good start for you. We rang in the new year with some of the white wine mulled wine I made yesterday for the blog, rather than with our usual glass of bubbly. This white wine version of Glühwein makes a nice change from the red wine variety, which we all know and love. It also makes a great gift – it looks very pretty filled into bottles with a stick of cinnamon, some star anise and a few berries. Continue reading
